Step by Step Instructions
Here are step by step photos and instructions on how to make this yeasted Belgian waffle recipe! For the full ingredient list and method, see the recipe card at the end of this post.
STEP 1: Make the batter. In a large bowl, whisk together two cups milk, melted butter, eggs, one tablespoon of vanilla, and one half teaspoon salt, and stir until well combined. Add the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, and yeast) to the wet ingredients and fold together or mix with a hand mixer until fully combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for at least one hour or overnight.
STEP 2: Make the waffles. When ready to make the waffles, place your waffle iron over low-medium heat. Pour in about 1 cup of your Belgian waffle batter and cook until evenly golden brown, or about 2 minutes on each side. Set each waffle on a wire rack to cool slightly. Serve immediately with butter, fresh fruit, and maple syrup.
Expert Baking Tips
- Chill the batter overnight. For more depth of flavor, chill the batter overnight in the fridge. If you're in a pinch, chill it for at least one hour.
- Skip the non-stick spray. To achieve crisp, evenly golden waffles don't use non-stick spray, just be sure to let your waffle iron heat up for a few minutes on both sides.
- Set the cooked waffles on a wire rack. To avoid the fresh cooked waffles from losing their crispness, place them on a wire rack. If you set them on a plate, the steam will turn that crisp exterior soggy!
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can use either instant or active dry yeast in this recipe!
The beauty of these Belgian waffles is that they're totally customizable when it comes to toppings! I love adding fresh berries and maple syrup, but you could use other fruits like bananas and add whipped cream, sweeter toppings like Nutella or jam, or even make these regular waffles into dessert and top them with ice cream or powdered sugar!
These waffles are best eaten right after you make them, but you can also store them in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Baking in Grams
All of the recipes on this blog are carefully developed with gram measurements so you can easily recreate them in your own kitchen with success. Volume measurements are extremely inaccurate and leave room for significant errors. Not all measuring cups are made equally, so your one cup of flour will be different from my one cup of flour. By providing precise measurements in grams (aside from minor ingredients, which are given in tsp/tbsp), you can make these recipes accurately and with less cleanup! All you need is this kitchen scale.
If this still isn't enough to convince you, I have provided volume measurements in the recipe card. If you are interested in understanding the conversions, this is the best conversion chart.
But trust me, once you try baking in grams you'll never turn back!
Happy baking! x
